CofC V-Day 2010: a success!

The numbers are still being crunched, but CofC V-Day was a success! We had three great performances, and a weeks worth of events and activism! Even the snow couldn't dampen the enthusiasm of our audience, volunteers, and cast. We took some great pictures this year so we will share those soon, and perhaps some final reflections and ideas for next year. Keep visiting this page!

WEATHER UPDATES

So, the weather gods are against us and of course it could possibly snow this evening. We have no intention of canceling or rescheduling the show UNLESS the College of Charleston is closed (we would not have access to our building).

We are currently STILL WAITING to hear whether or not the College will be closed today. Assuming it will not be, the show must go on! We will have both of our performances this evening at 7pm and midnight.

IF the College is closed, stay tuned for rescheduling updates.

Thanks and hopefully we will see you tonight!

We Challenge You

Have you started chatting about vaginas yet?? If you haven't already, try this: in your facebook/twitter/myspace/any other social networking thingy you have, put the heading "my vagina is... ________" and fill in the blank.

For example, "my vagina is... readinga book by Will Roscoe on Two Spirited Native American people"

Now you try it!

*if you do not have a vagina...get creative!*

one week to go...

In just one week, CofC will be abuzz about vaginas. Shirts, buttons, candy, posters, and cookies will be the visible, ever present signs that it is V-Day week. But what are some of the other things that will signify V-Day week? People talking about vaginas. All. The. Time.

I would like to think that maybe the "Overheard at CofC" Facebook group will have a spike in conversations about vaginas. Sure, some people will probably be shrieking in Cougar Mall, "OH MMMM GEE, does that really say vaaaginnnnaass on it? That is so cool. I love college and that we can just talk about vaginas here, like, between geology lecture and philosophy class. What will my mom say when I wear my shirt at home? Oh wait, I don't care because this is such a cool looking shirt!!"

But maybe some people won't be shrieking. For whatever reason, some people want to keep their conversations about vaginas on the down low. Some people might have experienced sexual violence that makes them want to stay private about these things, some people might have been raised in a house where saying the word vagina resulted in being grounded for a few weeks, and some people might just be at different places in working through all the things that do alienate women from their vaginas. Or maybe they are just quiet.

I think that enthusiasm about vaginas, about loving and respecting women, and ending violence comes in all forms. So I'm going to be paying extra attention to the people who sneak up to the V-Day table to buy a VagPop or two, who smile, slightly embarassed, that they are purchasing candy that looks like a body part. I know they care about vaginas, they just show their love in different ways!
